Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

If you come to Hawaii, you must see the Volcanoes National Park! It has many historic and recent attractions, lots of fun side-trips, great hiking trails, rain forest habitat and fauna, and evening lava displays (if you can stay). And all for only $10 a carload! The altitude here is around 3,500 feet which makes it a great retreat to beat the summer heat.

I visited the park once before towards evening on a rainy November day and didn't get my money's worth then. The advantage of living only 30 miles away is that you can look towards the park and see if the sky is clear. This time it was a pure delight, and I was really impressed with what I saw. There were two major hikes involved across the Kilauea Caldera (Walk Kilauea and Halema'uma'u) and down to Ka'aha Bay (Hilina and Ka'aha).
