If you stand near where the river meets the sea and look back up to the northeast you see the old city including the old church tower with bells that still chime. You can see that the city was originally built on this high spot above the beach. On the right you get a better look back southeast toward the land to see how new development is taking advantage of the hills to get views of the beach.
I had to put in a good word for the Posada de Roger, where I stayed, pretty much in the restaurant area of town about four blocks south of the river and 4 blocks in from the sea. It is about the least expensive place you will find and has a rooftop pool which is a great place to strike up a conversation with a worldly wise Canadian. How do those Canadians always turn up at the best spots?
